When the OpenVPN Access Server is installed without a license key it allows only 2 simultaneous VPN connections. There is no time limit or functionality limit on this mode. The only difference between a licensed Access Server and an unlicensed one is the amount of simultaneous OpenVPN tunnel connections the Access Server allows. To unlock more connections you can purchase a license key to unlock a certain amount of connections. There are two licensing models. One is BYOL which means Bring Your Own License, which means you can install your Access Server on any supported system, and then buy and activate a software subscription license for it from our website. The other licensing model is specifically for Amazon AWS. On Amazon AWS you have the choice of using our cloud image which accepts a software license from our website, or you can use the AWS Marketplace to select and launch an instance with a specific amount of allowed connections, which gets billed through AWS directly and requires no separate license.

Please also note that having a software subscription license for OpenVPN Access Server does not mean you can connect to our servers with your OpenVPN client program. A software subscription license is meant for an OpenVPN Access Server installation on a server you manage. Purchasing and having an Access Server software subscription license does not mean that you can connect to openvpn.net with your OpenVPN client program. That is not a service we offer on openvpn.net.

We improved the security of our fixed licenses with version 2.6.1. If you prefer to continue using fixed licenses, you can continue to do so with your license key. We do encourage you to keep your Access Server updated. Running on the latest version is good security etiquette.

If you try to activate a new license key or a renewal license key on an outdated and unpatched OpenVPN Access Server, you will see an error message. To resolve that, follow the instructions to either upgrade your Access Server to the latest version, or apply a licensing patch.

When you activate a license key, you do not keep the two free connections you start with. Upon activation, the stated connections from your license become the supported amount. For example if you are testing the Access Server without a license key, and you are allowed to connect two devices simultaneously to it, and you then activate a purchased license key for ten connections, then you can then connect ten devices to the Access Server, not 12.

Also please note that when you activate a fixed license key, it then becomes non-refundable as per our license agreement you accepted upon purchase and installation. Make sure to take every opportunity to test your Access Server prior to purchasing and activating a key.

Hi, we have a ProSafe Gigabit 8 Port Firewall FSV318Gv2, and I'm needing a license key for it. I tried to follow the link to buy one, but the link is broken (I'm assuming because it's an older model). It's been in use for several years at a remote location, and I'm needing to get into it, but I'm struggling to find a way/place to buy a license key for the software so I can get into it. Since the switch is at another location, I can't get to it to get a serial number or anything. Is there a way I can get a license key or anything for this to get the software working again?

As I stated in my post, the switch itself is actually at a different location that I am about 45 minutes away, and it's up in a tower that's not easily accessible. Is there any way to buy a license for the software itself and not have to have the serial number? There's no telling when I would be able to physically get to the switch to find any kind of serial number.

It is a ProSafe Gigabit 8 Port Firewall FSV318Gv2. I literally just need a license key to the Netgear VPN Client so I can access the GUI of the firewall. Since the download of the VPN Client comes with a 30 day free trial, I was able to access the firewall, so I know this is what I'm needing. Without the VPN Client to open the tunnel to allow me to access the firewall, then I can't manage it like I need to. I've attached a picture of the license key screen the software is asking for to show you what I am referring too.

I understand that you need the license in order for you to view the serial number of the firewall. But the problem is, each VPN firewall has a corresponding VPN license key. Perpetual is a lifetime license (buy once, use forever). It is possible to transfer a perpetual license to another CHR instance. A running CHR instance will indicate the time when it has to access the account server to renew it's license. If the CHR instance will not be able to renew the license it will behave as if the trial period has ran out and will not allow an upgrade of RouterOS to a newer version.

After licensing a running trial system, you must manually run the /system license renew command from the CHR to make it active. Otherwise the system will not know you have licensed it in your account.
